Corpus Poeticum Boreale: The Poetry of the Old Northern Tongue from the Earliest Times to the Thirteenth Century is a major two-volume collection of Old Norse and related Northern poetry edited, classified, and translated by Guðbrandur Vigfússon and F. York Powell.

The first volume focuses on Eddic poetry, while the second addresses court poetry. Together the volumes collect poetic texts and fragments accompanied by extensive introductions, notes, translations, classifications, and scholarly commentary.

Use at HIES

Corpus Poeticum Boreale provides an advanced source collection for the study of Old Norse poetry, textual scholarship, translation, and historical philology at Hákonarætt Institute of Eddic Studies.

It is especially relevant to advanced study involving Eddic poetry, skaldic and court poetry, Old Norse poetics, textual interpretation, manuscript traditions, comparative translation, and the history of scholarship concerning Old Northern literature.

Because this work was published in 1883, students should distinguish the primary poetic material from the editors' translations, classifications, textual decisions, and scholarly interpretations.

Inclusion in the Open Library does not mean that every text or section is assigned in every HIES course. Specific required readings are identified within individual courses on the HIES Learning Platform.
